Mediterranean diet is recommended for good health and does wonders in controlling different disorders. A Mediterranean diet is a combination of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and has a low amount of meat and eggs.
The recent research says that Mediterranean diet is as good as the traditional medication recommended by the health experts when it comes to controlling acid reflux. The role of Mediterranean diet in the patients diagnosed with laryngopharyngeal reflux was analyzed. The laryngopharyngeal reflux is the acid reflux condition in which the stomach content is flushed back into the esophagus.
As the stomach acids are reflected back into the esophagus it may result in coughing, hoarseness, sore throat and pain in the chest. The consumption of Mediterranean diet holds good in treating this condition. Although this is not a fatal condition it may cause uneasiness.
The proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are usually recommended by the health experts to treat this condition. These PPIs reduce the stomach acid. But if a person consumes filtered water and switch to the Mediterranean diet that there is no need of PPIs.
To test the effectiveness of this diet the researchers from New York city analyzed the medical records of the patients who were diagnosed with acid reflux condition. These participants were divided into 2 groups. The first group consisted of 85 individuals belonging to 60s and who took PPI medication to treat the acid reflux condition. These participants did not consume spicy foods, beverages, alcohol and fried items.
The second group consisted of 99 individuals who followed a Mediterranean diet and cut down the intake of beverages and replaced them with alkaline water. At the end of the study, the effect of PPIs and the Mediterranean diet on the acid reflux condition was measured.
It was observed that patients who consumed PPIs have shown 27.2% reduction in the acid reflux condition whereas the patients who consumed Mediterranean diet have shown huge 39.3% reduction in acid reflux condition. Hence it was proved that consumption of plant based diet along with alkaline water can provide benefits which are similar to the ones provided by medication. The detailed study and its results have been published in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
